The key is becoming excellent at your class. Not just good, but great. To excel as a hunter, you have to prove to people that without you, the group could easily fall.
I'll give an example. I was in heroic Slave Pens just last night. We came up to the 2nd boss (big lobster lookin dude). Right before him there are 4 pulls of
the same little lobsters. So the tank says he'll handle 3 of them, I just need to trap one. Our CC was somewhat limited to a druid, and myself. We had a rogue, but he didn't have imp. sap and when he tried to sap something, he went down to fast.
I set out a trap as we get ready. The pull comes, I get my lobster,
then immediately set down another trap. I pull another one away from the tank, and trap that as well. Now I have 2 on ice, and we're DPSing down the 2 that are beating on the tank. The cooldown comes a little late as the first one pops out of his trap. I conc shot, lay down another trap, wait for him to get closer,
then scatter shot. The reason for scatter shot is to give your cooldown of your trap more time. It keeps the mob out of the trap, but also keeps him stunned just long enough.
So now I still have 2 mobs under control. We get the 2 mobs down before my 2nd trap breaks, and now I just have to worry about my original guy in his trap. The group itself was amazed and didn't realize a hunter could in fact double trap. I've told them technically we can tripple trap, but it's not nearly as efficient or as safe (plus I'm not spec'd yet for tripple trapping ;) ).
Another scenario I can give is Kara. I've saved not only a fellow hunter, but many of our healers because of
my CCing abilities. Either by kiting, trapping, wing-clipping, scatter shot, etc. I use everything at my disposal, including Deterrence, to keep the mobs off the healers. If I go down and the mob gets trapped, I consider that a win. It's ok to sacrifice yourself for the greater good. Sometimes FD isn't always the best option. Sure it might save you, but now your healer just got the whole blunt of the aggro, and if they go down, chances are so will the rest of the group.

If you stopped comparing yourself to others, do you think you would enjoy life more?Unless you play with a guild where everyone fails at life you're going to get invited to raids.
We're a very usable class. We've got the single most effective CC in the game. And if we're skilled enough (Az is gonna burn me for this one) we can reach mage and rogue DPS.-Talnivarr EU:

Tyrana - 71 MageHello lately ive decided to play my NE hunter. He is level 49 and really fun to play in bg's. I was thinking of leveling him up to
70 and doing arena and battlegrounds. I also really want to do raids like karazhan, only problem is alot of people make hunters and they aren't really a class rogues and mages can out dps them. Is it worth my time to level up my hunter? I dont want to level him up if im not going to get in a good guild that will let me into raids.
